Assignment Generator - Start
The 16S rRNA gene can provide a valuable introduction to phylogenetic analysis and bacterial classification, but its use in the classroom can be troublesome for both students and instructors - especially for large classes.
This tool helps instructors by generating unique sequences that can be easily distributed to a classroom (for up to 1000 students). It provides a set of easy-to-follow instructions for students, and an answer key for instructors to help evaluate student performance. The sequences are randomly selected from a set of well-known genera. We "evolve" the sequences by modifying the small number of bases. The changes preserve rRNA secondary structure and avoid highly conserved positions.
